It is always hard to get back after being away. Part of it is the loss of momentum. Part of it is inertia (Every body perseveres in its state of being at rest or of moving uniformly straight ahead, except insofar as it is compelled to change its state by forces impressed. [Cohen & Whitman 1999 translation])
Momentum is mass in motion and it is in such sustained motion that it takes an effort to stop. It is a product of mass and velocity. Wikipedia says that "in general the momentum of an object can be conceptually thought of as the tendency for an object to continue to move in its direction of travel. As such, it is a natural consequence of Newton's first law."
These laws of motion and rest are at play in our work- rightly so and wrongly so.
If we develop an unhealthy dependence upon them to the exclusion of genuine initiative, spiritual sensitivity, and creativity driven by deep conviction and commitment, we lose the spark that originally ignited our passion. Then, if there is a change of pattern, we have difficulty with the restart process.
On the other hand, we can gain a great deal of energy from momentum and, to some extent, inertia. Along with that energy flow, there is the potential for energy conservation and greater efficiency. The restart after a pattern break may be difficult, but it is a renewal after refreshment and has a great deal of value.
That is my reflection on having been away from my blog. Frankly, I have simply had other foci, some urgent, some planned. all demanding at some very deep levels in real time.
This is very important to me. Writing daily in my blogs is a major commitment in my life. Having people read what I write is important, but secondary.
The larger implications have to do with vacations, summers, waves, formants, and seasons. We are simply not meant to repeat a rote pattern day in and out, week after week, year after year with no variation. It is no formula for success not to recognize the tides of grace and the rhythms of the God's universe.
That is where I've been --- at least it sounds good as excuses go.
