Mayor Ashley Swearengin said Sunday she will expand her knowledge of the city by doing ride-alongs with the Fresno Police Department.

Swearengin made her comments at The Unitarian Universalist Church of Fresno, where she was invited to address the congregation about the city's opportunities and challenges.

Speaking to about 90 people, Swearengin said she liked Police Chief Jerry Dyer's idea of having his administrative staff patrol the city at least once a month so they can get to know residents.

David and Kristine VonHurst have opened Old Town Thrift Shop with David's mother, Alana Walker, on the east side of Clovis Avenue near Barstow in Clovis. The 2,800-square-foot building used to house County Motor Sports.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is hoping to boost incomes to small farmers and give consumers greater access to local fruits and vegetables with a $4.5 million grant program aimed at promoting farmers markets.

The funding, announced Thursday, is part of the Farmers Market Promotions Program and will be distributed nationwide.
